Job Summary

We are looking for keen and committed apprentices to join our Civil Infrastructure teams. AECOM is an internationally recognised leader in consultancy, giving our clients a range of services including planning, design, project management, asset management, contract management, site supervision and asset support services. Our team in Europe is constantly expanding; with a number of exciting opportunities now available for apprentices to work within our Civil Infrastructure teams (Water, Ports, Power, Highways, Transportation, Structures, etc.) across the UK and Ireland, with opportunities to support operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Our teams deal with a range of different projects across the globe working with funding agencies, national and local governments, highways authorities and private organisations. Successful candidates will work on projects from initial concept through to construction and operation on small to large high profile projects with a variety of clients. Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international highway and infrastructure improvements.

Become an AECOM Apprentice

You will combine work-based on-the-job training and learning with further studies and will have opportunities to progress your career. After an initial probationary period you must be willing to undertake a day release course at University.

No work experience is necessary, but you must be willing to learn on-the-job, contribute new ideas and collaborate with diverse teams in a variety of locations.

This position is suited to anyone who can:

  • Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and use of digital tools e.g. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar digital software

  • Demonstrate an interest and a desire to pursue a career in civil infrastructure

  • Bring commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities

  • Be creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic

  • Demonstrate ability for attention to detail

  • Develop ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organize parts of projects

  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports

This Could Be You

Lyn joined AECOM as a school leaver in 1992, starting out as a trainee civil engineering technician, working their way up to current position as an Associate within the Strategic Highways team in Glasgow.

Lyn is now a full member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and lead AECOM’s 3D modelling and building information modelling team in Glasgow working on the £1.6 billion A303 Stonehenge highway scheme. In 2016 Lyn reached the finals of the Women in Construction and Engineering Awards in the Best Woman in Highways category — a highlight of Lyn's career.

Charlotte Jones is an apprentice in the Birmingham Roads Engineering team. She is studying BEng Civil Engineering at Coventry University. Since joining AECOM as a Level 3 apprentice four years ago she is now at university, studying to become a civil engineer, attending one day a week alongside on the job training. AECOM pays for all of her study, and she has also developed the skills to design and optimise junctions and traffic signals and conducted road safety audits for the Birmingham Cycle Revolution, helping make cycling easier and more accessible in the city.

Description

** This is a postgraduate HLA – applications should only be made to this course if you meet the entry criteria. You must have obtained an undergraduate degree (or at the least industry experience sufficient to meet RPEL entrance requirements).

This course is taught by a mixture of academic staff and industrial practitioners, bringing cutting edge research together with real world industry experience into the classroom.

FUNDING / COMMITMENT
This Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) is fully funded by the DfE, although places are limited. Applicants and their employers must demonstrate commitment, and ensure enough time is allocated, to attend and complete the course.

ABOUT YOU
The HLA is a work / study programme so you will already be in employment, or have a firm offer of employment from a company in the construction sector which supports your application.

You will have a keen interest in BIM and digital construction. You may already have experience using BIM – hands on experience of BIM is not necessary for starting the course, but it can be useful.

COURSE CONTENT
The course’s primary focus is on project management using the building information modelling process, which will give you the chance to take your career forward.

We teach the principles of project management, while using building information modelling.

THE ENVIRONMENT
As a part time student, you study alongside the full-time cohort in a class of around 30 alongside people from places like India, Nigeria, China, Vietnam and Egypt. Our teaching starts in the afternoon as we know you will need to take time off work to attend classes.

You’ll have the beautiful new Graduate School at your disposal as well as a dedicated base room and computer lab in the Elmwood building.

WHAT YOU'LL GET UP TO
The course is all about balancing theory and practice – a mixture of hands-on building, manipulation and management of models, as well as consideration of the higher level analytical and critical thinking skills that come with Masters level education.

Modules

The Higher Level Apprenticeship is a part time programme, to enable students to learn on the programme, whilst consolidating their new skills and knowledge at work.

The programme is delivered 1 day per-week (Monday for the first year, Friday for the second year). Nine modules (including Dissertation) totalling 180 CATS points are included in the programme, with no optional modules available.

Lectures are delivered by industry orientated lecturers and external experts within the field of Project Management and Building Information Modelling. Assessment is undertaken through coursework and presentations.

The course content gives theoretical and practical coverage across a wide variety of topics:

Building Information Modelling in Practice (10 CATS)

This module is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the underlying principles of BIM implementation in practice, particularly in relation to the utilisation of intelligent 3D models. It explores the standards and processes that help to govern the huge range of information generated by the diverse teams who must collaborate to make BIM a success.

Emerging Digital Technology (20 CATS)

This module explores the new technologies which are emerging in the field of BIM and Digital Construction, examining the potential of technology to disrupt the construction industry.

Procurement Contract Administration and LAW (20 CATS)

Procurement, contract administration and the understanding of contract law is one of the 'keystone skills' for Project Management. This module provides an understanding of construction procurement and contract routes, and contract and tort law, and their application within the construction context.

Project Coordination, Planning and Control (10 CATS)

This module aims to enhance student awareness of developments in the field of construction project management coordination emphasising the wide range of demands made on construction professionals as managers and the skills required to programme, monitor and control various aspects of a construction project from inception to completion.

Research Methods for Managers (10 CATS)

The module deals with principles of BIM and construction management research from the formulation of research questions, hypothesis and objectives, through literature review, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, to presentation of data and report writing.

Project Planning for Sustainability (20 CATS)

The need for infrastructure to be sustainable is one of the driving factors behind project planning, design, construction and operation. This module aims to enhance student awareness of developments in the field of sustainable project development and construction including the need for a connected approach to economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Technical BIM Implementation (30 CATS)

This module is designed to develop students’ comprehensive understanding of the detailed principles of BIM implementation using a suite of software packages, both architectural and engineering, in the development of intelligent 3D models.

Individual Research Project (Dissertation) (60 CATS)

For the Dissertation, students are required to undertake an independent research project, producing a written dissertation focusing on a particular issue within the realm of BIM and construction project management.

Entry Criteria

Normally a 2.2 Honours degree in a relevant discipline e.g. Architecture, Engineering or Social Science, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.

Applicants with relevant work experience will be considered on a case-by case-basis. The University's Recognition of Prior Learning Policy provides guidance on the assessment of experiential learning (RPEL).
