Are you considering a career in the Construction industry?  Dowds Group’s Higher Level Apprenticeship Programme gives you the opportunity to learn new skills, earn a competitive salary and gain a nationally recognised Level 4, 5 or 6 qualifications.

The aim of the Apprenticeship Scheme is to set you on the path within our Commercial / Pre-Construction Departments with options to specialise in Estimating or M&E Quantity Surveying and the support of our dedicated supervisors, who provide mentorship and career coaching throughout your programme. 

As a Commercial HLA you will work closely with estimators and quantity surveyors to help manage and track the commercial aspects of the project, helping to prepare tenders/bids, negotiating costs with sub-contractors, producing value reports, and supporting client changes to the project – while ensuring delivery is timely and profitable.

Combining both experience within our commercial teams and secondments to our sites, you’ll work on a range of projects to support your growth and understanding of the industry – completing your apprenticeship with a degree level qualification and the relevant practical experience to further your career with Dowds Group. 

Please note that while our head office is currently in Ballymoney but we are moving to a new Ballymena Head Quarters in Spring 2023 which will be the base for all 2023 opportunities!

Salary stated is a baseline - actual salary will be dependent on age and experience.

Person Specification


  • 3 A-levels (A-C) or relevant Level 3 qualification.

  • A genuine interest in building a career in Commercial / Pre-Construction

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Good level of knowledge of Microsoft packages.

 While we have stipulated the HNC L4 Construction & The Built Environment (Building Services) course as part of this apprenticeship, we are aware that there is only one location in NI currently offering the course - we would be open to alternative courses as long as the content was applicable to the role and will be flexible in our approach to accommodating anyone willing to travel for the course.

This programme is delivered using a range of on-campus and online synchronous and asynchronous approaches.   

Assessment:

  • Students are assessed using a range of different methods. These include tests, coursework, presentations, practical, posters, leaflets, role-play, and case studies. This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study. Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course to help improve and monitor performance.

Entry Criteria

General Entry Requirements

  • GCSE English Language Grade C or above OR Pass in Level 2 Essential Skills Literacy

  • GCSE Mathematics Grade C or above OR Pass in Level 2 Essential Skills Numeracy 

 UCAS

  • A minimum of 48 UCAS points including: Two A Levels at A2 OR Level 3 National Diploma

Access Diploma

  • Access Diploma in Foundation Studies with an overall average of 50%+ 

English Language Requirements for International students:

  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2

  • IELTS 6.0 (minimum of 5.5 in all skills)

  • PTE 51 Or an approved equivalent test in English

Equivalent qualifications include:

  • Grade C (or above) in GCSE English

  • Successful completion of a Level 3 Vocational Programme with assessments completed in English Language

  • Essential Skills in Literacy (Level 2)

  • ESOL Level 2 

Tier 4 Students:

  • SERC will only accept a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for issuing a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) 

Admissions

APEL

Progression Pathway
