Job Description


We have a number of different roles available across our Pre Press and Manufacturing departments as follows:

While the starting salary is £16,500 per year, this will increase as training progresses. We would expect successful candidates to reach full salary within two years of starting.

Litho Printer - 1 position

Producing high quality printed sheets on press for conversion to packaging cartons.

Main Tasks

  • Setting the Press to attain effective running and acceptable standard of quality.

  • Ensuring that ‘first off’ approval is conducted as per the Quality Procedures and making decision on quality when working without the supervision, helping to minimize downtime.

  • Establish optimum running speeds to achieve required efficiency targets as measured via KPI’s, and checking colour consistency throughout print run to ensure the maintenance of acceptable quality standards.

  • Checking the quality of printing on a regular basis and correcting and removing faults detected to reduce quantity of work defective.

Die Cutting Operative - 1 position

Converting printed sheets to folding cartons using auto platen machinery.

Main Tasks

  • Setting the machine to attain effective running and ensuring that the ‘first off’ approval is as per customer specification and conducted as outlined within our company procedures. 

  • Running the machine at optimum speed whilst ensuring that the appropriate standard of quality is maintained. 

  • Implementation of the Companies Maintenance program & maintaining a clean and tidy work environment and completing associated documentation. 

  • Compliance with relevant procedures to ensure work is of acceptable quality and systems followed.

Gluing Machine Operative - 1 position

Producing 3 dimensional folding cartons from Die Cut sheets in a variety of styles and sizes

Main Tasks

  • Setting the machine to attain effective running and ensuring that the ‘first off’ approval is as per customer specification and conducted as outlined within our company procedures. 

  • Running the machine at optimum speed whilst ensuring that the appropriate standard of quality is maintained. 

  • Implementation of the Companies Maintenance program & maintaining a clean and tidy work environment and completing associated documentation. 

  • Compliance with relevant procedures to ensure work is of acceptable quality and systems followed.

Computer to Plate Operative (CTP) - 1 position

Receiving and adapting customer artwork files to ensure they are suitable for press and output of printing plates

Main Tasks :

  • Working as part of a team to produce artwork for customers. Prepare and produce plates for printing presses.

  • Follow daily quality procedures of Retrieving and Supplying of Drawings and Blankets, Transferring of Files to Plate processor and printing presses.

  • Outputting and Checking of plates before they go to press.

  • Looking after and maintaining CTP processors and  Equipment.

Labels Operatives - 2 positions

Producing high specification flexographic self adhesive labels

Main Tasks :

  • Ensuring all components including inks, plates and cutting dies are available on press.

  • Printing of high quality labels on industry leading printing machines.

  • Separation and inspection of labels to ensure they are suitable for customers application machines

Person Specification


The successful candidates will be self motivated, with hands on technical skills capable of working with machinery and information technology. They will have good attention to detail, good communication skills and should be able to work well as part of a team or individually as required.

Candidates should have GCSE Grade C at English and Maths or equivalent.

Applicants for printing positions will need good colour differentiating skills.

Machine Printing Level 2Belfast Metropolitan College

Description

This qualification is aimed at those who work as machine operatives (minders) on single and multi unit
production printing presses. Assessment of the qualification can take place in occupational roles that include: Lithography (Sheet-fed) Printing, Lithography (Web-fed) Printing, Flexography Printing, Gravure Printing and Screen Printing and this
will be reflected on the Qualification Certificate.

The standards cover the most important aspects of the job. This qualification is at Level 2, and should be taken
by those who are fully trained to deal with routine assignments. Candidates should require minimum supervision in undertaking the job. A further qualification for machine printing at Level 3 is also available.
In addition, there are qualifications available to cover Print Finishing and Pre-press. Candidates for this qualification will need to contribute to Company objectives, follow Health and Safety guidelines and in addition candidates for this qualification will primarily be:

• Acting as first or second minders on the Press
• Involved in the set up and running, maintenance and wash down of single and multi colour production machines

Candidates are likely to have jobs entitled;

• Machine minder
• No 1s/No 2s
• Machine operative

Assessment Guidance

Evidence should show that you can complete all of the learning outcomes for each unit being taken.

Types of evidence:

Evidence of performance and knowledge is required. Evidence of performance should be demonstrated by activities and outcomes, and should be generated in the workplace only, unless indicated under potential sources of evidence (see below). Evidence of knowledge can be demonstrated though performance or by responding to questions.

Quantity of evidence:

Evidence should show that you can meet the requirements of the units in a way that demonstrates that the standards can be achieved consistently over an appropriate period of time.

Potential sources of evidence:

The main source of evidence for each unit will be observation of the candidate’s performance and knowledge demonstrated during the completion of the unit. This can be supplemented by the following types of physical or documentary evidence:

  • Accident books/reporting systems

  • Job samples

  • Notes and memos

  • Photographic/video evidence

  • Job bags/works instruction tickets

Examples of evidence could include:

  • Assessor observation reports

  • Printed output (good and fault copies)

Modules

GQA qualifications are made up of a number of units that have a credit value or credits. These credits must be achieved in the correct combination from mandatory and optional units: this qualification has 5 mandatory units and a group of optional units. Candidates should achieve all credits from the 5 mandatory units, plus a minimum of 7 credits from the group of optional units. This makes the minimum credit value of the qualification 32 credits. The group of optional units is intended to allow all those involved in Machine Printing to achieve the full qualification: when choosing from the optional units it is important to ensure the units selected are appropriate and achievable within your job role. The units are made up of the things you need to know and the things you need to be able to do to carry out your job safely and correctly. These are called Learning Outcomes, and all must be met to achieve the unit.

Qualifications are now required to indicate the total qualification time (TQT), this is to show the typical time it will take someone to attain the required skills and knowledge to meet the qualification criteria, this qualification has a TQT of 320 hours. Qualifications are also required to indicate the number of hours of teaching someone would normally need to receive in order to pass the qualification. These are referred to as Guided Learning Hours (GLH). The GLH for this qualification is 209

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is aimed at those who work as machine operatives (minders) on single and multi unit production printing presses, producing multi colour work. Assessment of the qualification can take place in a number of contexts including: Lithography (Sheet-fed) Printing, Lithography (Web-fed) Printing, Flexography Printing, Gravure Printing and Screen Printing and this will be reflected on the Qualification Certificate. The standards cover the most important aspects of the job. This qualification is at Level 3, and should be taken by those who have the responsibility for managing the machines, including monitoring and controlling the quality of output using a range of methods, and are responsible for ensuring the production records are completed in line with Company requirements. A further qualification for machine printing at Level 2 is also available.

In addition, there are qualifications available to cover Print Finishing and Pre-press. Candidates for this qualification will need to contribute to improving the efficiency in the completion of the Company objectives, promote the Company Health and Safety guidelines and policies and in addition candidates for this qualification will primarily be:

  • Able to manage, monitor and control the production output producing multi colour work for print

  • In control of the set up and running, maintenance and wash down of single and multi colour production machines

These are called Learning Outcomes, and all must be met to achieve the unit.

Qualifications are now required to indicate the total qualification time (TQT), this is to show the typical time it will take someone to attain the required skills and knowledge to meet the qualification criteria, this qualification has a TQT of 370 hours. Qualifications are also required to indicate the number of hours of teaching someone would normally need to receive in order to pass the qualification.
