Job Description


Apprentice Software Engineers at Civica are learning and working towards promotion to Software Engineer position.

  • As part of the team, our Software Engineers use agile methodology to deliver product requirements under the guidance of the product Lead Engineer. 

  • The Engineer is expected to code and take ownership of software projects in accordance with the existing development process/coding guidelines and to perform other tasks as may reasonably be required. Additionally, to support co-engineers and train junior engineers as necessary and work with data manipulation and ad-hoc data queries and data uploads.

At apprenticeship level you will be supporting and contributing to the team, picking up more advanced tasks as you progress.

Successful candidates will get the chance to upskill in a range of different technologies and join a global organisation where they can progress their career. 

Location: you will primarily be based in the Civica Belfast office whilst on-boarding. Once you are confident in your assigned tasks you will be able to work from home if you wish.

Software, Cloud and Application Development (Top-Up L6, from L5)Belfast Metropolitan College

Description

These programmes have been created primarily for Level 5 HLA apprentices who have successfully completed their Level 5 foundation degree. However the programme will be open to others if they meet the entry criteria.


This is a part time 1-year long course spread over two academic years and the three modules will be Advanced Cloud Development Technologies, Data Engineering and Science and a Final Year Project.

This apprenticeship programme offers a BSc (Hons) Level 6 Top-Up for Foundation Degrees/HND students in Software Development/Engineering, Cloud and General Computing. The Northern Ireland Skills Barometer July 2019 has indicated that there could a shortfall of up to 11,360 skilled IT workers in Northern Ireland by 2028. Software development is one of the leading areas of IT in Northern Ireland and there is a predicted growth in the areas of Cloud & Application development as well as Data Analytics.

This course is designed to build on your software development/engineering, database, Cloud and computing skills in a meaningful and vocational way and give you the necessary skills to develop and progress within your chosen career path.

You will be taught by highly experienced staff in our computing labs that are fully equipped with industry standard hardware and software. This course will provide you with data solution and data modelling skills as well as container development skills as well as comprehensive skills of DevOps techniques used in the real world. You will also have an opportunity to sit a number of vendor qualifications separate to the course such as: Microsoft AZ-400, DP-100, DP-200 qualifications, DevOps Foundation Qualification and Certified Kubernetes Application Developer Qualification enhance employability and further learning within the sector. You will gain skills in Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes.

This is a full time one year course and the three modules (40 credits each) will be:

The modules will be a combination of exams and assignments.

Entry Criteria

Students must have completed and passed a foundation degree offered by the Open University at the College with Computing1 as the core discipline, or completed and passed an equivalent level 5 course with Computing1 as the core discipline e.g. other UK University Foundation Degrees at level 5, BTEC Higher Nation Diplomas, or any UK accredited level 5 qualification that is equivalent in academia to a foundation degree or the first two years of a bachelor’s degree with Computing1 as the core discipline as proven at the time of application.

Students who do not meet this criteria must complete and pass the bridging module, M250 Object-orientated Java Programming and bridging qualification Azure Fundamentals (MTC AZ-900).

The student must also have GCSEs at grade C or above in English and Mathematics, or equivalent qualifications, such as Level 2 Essential Skills in Maths and English.

Applicants who have already attained a qualification equivalent to or similar in content to any of the modules may be eligible to be considered for Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL).

Those who have acquired learning through life, work experience and study not previously attested through formal education or certification may be eligible to be considered for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
