The positions will be based around apprenticeship requirements, per your course, paid and based in Belfast initially, although there will be opportunities to gain experience from company offices such as New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Auckland and London for those who have successfully completed their apprenticeship.

Description

Accounting is an integral part of any business and a discipline which offers a wide variety of employment opportunities. 

The growth in multi-national organisations means that a qualification in accounting can provide you with global employment opportunities.

If you are interested in specialising in accounting and working within the financial or wider business sector, then this course is for you. This course is part of the two year Higher Level Apprenticeship program and runs for one day in college and the rest with an employer in an accountancy role (see entry requirements).

Progression Pathway

Opportunities to progress to further training leading to Chartered Accountancy Status (Chartered Accountants Ireland).

Careers may include:

Chartered Accountant – Auditing financial records. Reviewing and certifying book of accounts, balance sheets and statutory returns. Budgeting and reporting. Forecasting and investigation finance and account issues.

Tax Advisor – Researching, analysing and interpreting changing tax legislation. Providing documentation for correct implementation of company products. HMRC enquiry work and Tax Tribunals.

Financial Advisor - working with individuals to provide advice on tax and estate planning, retirement, risk management, savings and investment.

AccountingSouth Eastern Regional College

Description

This is a work-based programme which enables you to earn while you learn and gain a nationally recognised professional qualification.  The apprentice will be employed in an accountancy practice for two years and mentoring will be provided throughout the employment period. The Higher Level Apprenticeship in Accountancy provides an alternative entrance route to starting a career in the accountancy and finance profession.

Students will be employed for four days per week and will attend college one day per week. 

All staff teaching on the programme hold graduate, post graduate and professional qualifications as well as significant industry experience.

Apprentices, along with completing their year end exams, will also be required to complete two Work Based Modules. The Work Based modules are a mandatory part of the ATI Level 5 Diploma for Accounting Technicians, which enable learners to apply, consolidate and extend their learning within a workplace environment.

The work based modules have two elements:

  • Completion of a programme of Work-Based Learning (WBL)

  • Work-Based Assignments (WBAs)

There are 4 work based assignments each year, which the apprentice must complete. The work based assignments are based on 2 modules, which the apprentice is studying in their day release at college. However, the apprentice also needs to gain specific experience in work which ties in closely with all their modules and the requirements of the work based module.

Progression Pathway

Successful completion of the Accounting Technicians Ireland qualification can give you a distinct advantage in the market place as many employers view it as essential when they are hiring.  The course has enabled completing students to take up key roles in accounting practices and in industry. A percentage of ATI graduates decide to continue studying and will use the Accounting Technicians Ireland qualification as a stepping stone into other professional accounting and taxation bodies.  

Many graduates pursue further accounting studies with organisations such as Chartered Accountants Ireland, or the other professional bodies including the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA), or the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).  All these bodies offer Accounting Technicians Ireland graduates significant exemptions for taking their exams.

AccountingSouthern Regional College

Description

The Accounting Technicians Level 5 Diploma is a comprehensive higher level apprenticeship designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in accounting and finance. This course focuses on providing students with a solid foundation in accounting principles, financial analysis, and business management techniques.

Throughout the course, students will develop a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts and practices of accounting. They will study topics such as financial accounting, management accounting, cost accounting, and taxation. Students will learn to prepare financial statements, analyse financial data, and interpret accounting information to support decision-making processes.

The programme covers a wide range of accounting principles and techniques. Students will explore topics such as double-entry bookkeeping, ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll accounting. They will gain practical skills in recording financial transactions, reconciling accounts, and preparing financial reports. Students will also learn to use accounting software and spreadsheets to streamline financial processes and enhance efficiency.

The Accounting Technicians Level 5 Diploma as the main knowledge-based component of the framework. Each apprentice will undergo a specific induction programme (1 week intensive) and an online mentoring programme.

The Apprenticeship aims to provide a structured environment where you will, under the supervision of a qualified mentor, develop the professional values, leadership, technical/functional competencies and the personal and interpersonal attributes that define the role of an accounting technician and chartered accountant.

Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) is committed to providing training to all company mentors. This training is being provided to ensure consistency of ‘on-the-job’ programme standards and quality.

Entry Criteria

The over-riding consideration in admitting applicants to this course, is evidence that the learner is likely to be able to complete the course satisfactorily.

Attendance at Individual or Group Pre-Entry Advice Sessions (IPEAS and GPEAS) may be required. These interviews may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft teams) and will play an important role in place allocation.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age on or before 1st July 2024.

  • Applicants must have attained a minimum of 96 UCAS points achieved through the completion of A Levels, National Awards, Access or other alternative approved level 3 qualifications. The requirement for UCAS points are waived for mature students (over 21 years old) but their application will be approved by ATI on a case-by-case basis.

  • Applicants must have attained at least 15 points at Level 2 or above (e.g. GCSE) or have alternative approved qualifications. In addition, applicants must provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English Language. For entry to this programme, applicants should have attained a C grade in GCSE English language and a B grade in GCSE Maths (or equivalent) .

  • For those entering a Higher Level Apprenticeships (HLA), employers may further enhance the entry criteria at their discretion. All applicants for HLAs will be interviewed by prospective employers to decide their suitability prior to being employed by a company. Each the applicant must secure employment with a Northern Ireland based company with a minimum contract of 21 hours. Entrance to HLAs is subject to meeting DfE Operational requirements.

  • An employer interview is required.

  • Applicants who do not meet the criteria outlined above but have evidence of substantial knowledge or relevant industrial experience and skills, which has not been formally assessed, should refer to the College’s Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning (APEL) Policy.

Please note that applicants progressing to higher education courses at Level 4 and above in the College or UK Universities may require a specific GCSE/ A-Level profile. In some cases, the Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy may not be a suitable alternative to a GCSE. It is the responsibility of the applicant to check each University’s progression requirements before enrolling on a course at the College.

Progression Pathway

On successful completion of this course, students may wish to progress onto the BSc (Hons) Accounting Technology Level 6 Top-Up degree validated by Open University and awarded by Accounting Technicians Ireland delivered at SRC.

Upon successful completion of the higher level apprenticeship, graduates will be well-prepared for entry-level to intermediate positions in accounting and finance. They may find employment as accounting technicians, bookkeepers, accounts assistants, or financial analysts in various industries and organizations. Graduates may also choose to pursue further study to become a fully qualified accountant.

AccountingSouth West College

Description

The level 5 Diploma course is the first step on your journey to a new and rewarding career as an Accounting Technician. In your first year the level 4 Certificate prepares you to carry out basic accounting tasks in the workplace. Successful completion of the level 4 certificate will advance you to the level 5 Diploma to further your accountancy studies. The HLA at Erne campus is subject to approval.

Students who gain a place on this course must also register as a student member of Accounting Technicians Ireland. *The fees quoted are payable for each year.

Modules

Level 4 will provide you with a solid grounding in business as well as a strong foundation in accountancy and taxation, together with an introduction to business and company law. By advancing to the Level 5 you will progress your studies in Financial Accounting and Taxation and gain a good foundation in Management Accounting, while also developing relevant practical skills in using electronic accounting systems.

Description

This programme enables employees to undertake a Level 5 Diploma For Accounting Technicians. This is a two-year employment focused training and education programme. The programme is divided into four modules per year with an 4 additional work based assignments to be completed each year. Exams for the modules are invigilated online exams in May each year. The programme is delivered part time day release one day each week with the other 4 days working with a Northern Irish employer. Graduates benefit from formal workplace and academic mentoring, with two-years work experience gained in a real business environment, whilst gaining highly transferable skills. This course is open to career-changers, school-leavers, recent graduates and mature learners in Northern Ireland, exploring a career in accounting through applied learning. It is also open to current employees with a Northern Ireland based company, moving into a new job role and who wish to upskill.

If pathways to HLA level 6 - 7 studies exist then participants may wish to consider continuing their progression as a Higher Level Apprentice. Graduates can use their qualification as a stepping stone to Higher-Level Professional Accounting, Taxation or Degree Programmes. AccountancyNorthern Regional College

Description

As an apprentice, you will commit your time and effort to gaining the required skills and putting these into practice in the workplace. You will also be required to complete formal study one day per week at Northern Regional College for the ATI Diploma as well as informal work-based training (e.g. attending meetings). You will also be expected to play an active role in the mentoring programme determined by your employer. In return, your employer will commit to employing you for 2 years, pay you at least the national minimum wage, carry out regular reviews of your progress and provide career development support.

Modules

You will be employed for example in an accountancy practice or an organisation with a suitable accounts department for 2 years and Northern Regional College will have a close relationship with your employer in mentoring you throughout your employment period. The Higher Level Apprenticeship in Accountancy provides an alternative entrance route to starting your career in the accountancy and finance profession and is supported by Accounting Technicians Ireland and Chartered Accountants Ireland. It is also equivalent to a Foundation Degree programme and is recognised by leading accountancy bodies. 

For the Diploma for Accounting Technicians you are required to gain experiential learning through two years full-time employment (or the equivalent part-time), in addition to successfully completing the following subjects:
• Advanced Financial Accounting
• Advanced Taxation
• Management Accounting
• Financial Data Management

The Diploma for Accounting Technicians is a QCF Level 5 award in the UK and Northern Ireland and is aligned for Level 6 of the Irish National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) in the Republic of Ireland.

During Year 1, you will spend one day per week (9am-5pm) at the Northern Regional College. The apprenticeship framework will be at Level 5 and include the Accounting Technician Diploma as the main knowledge based component of the framework. You will also undergo a specific induction programme (1 week intensive) and an online mentoring programme for example the “Get In Get On” provided through the Financial Legal Services Partnership (provided in the first
four weeks).

This apprenticeship aims to provide a structured environment where you will develop the professional values, leadership, technical/functional competencies and the personal and interpersonal attributes that define the role of an accounting technician and chartered accountant. All employer mentors will have undergone mentor training by Accountancy Technicians Ireland (ATI) which ensures consistency of ‘on the job’ programme standards and quality. If successful, you will be enrolled and subsequently become a full member of Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) during your training programme.

Entry Criteria

  • At least 18 years of age and meet the minimum entry criteria set by the awarding body, Accounting Technicians Ireland. The criteria is currently 96 UCAS tariff points or CCC at A Level, grade B at GCSE level in Mathematics or Accountancy and grade C at GCSE level in English. For those over 23 years of age, relevant work experience or a recommendation from your employer is required. 

  • A new employee in, or about to take up a permanent remunerative employment offer, or an existing employee moving to a new job role that requires a substantial amount of learning and skills development commensurate to the apprenticeship pathway. An exception may be made if an individual is already on an apprenticeship pathway at a lower level, with the HLA providing a progression route without the need to move to a new job role. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure this criteria is met.

  • Employed by a company with a permanent base in Northern Ireland, have a contract of employment in place, be contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week (which includes day release/off-the-job directed training) with one employer, and in receipt of the appropriate wage. NOTE: you may start your employment up to a maximum of 6 months prior to the commencement of your off-the-job training.  The College will require a copy of your contract of employment and a wage slip to provide evidence that you are employed.

  • Third country nationals, including European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss Nationals and their family members, are eligible to undertake a HLA provided they have a right to live and work in the UK.  See HLA page for further details
