Gina is an exceptional software engineer whose career story beautifully captures what this podcast is all about: real people doing good work, and the systems and support that helps them thrive.
Gina’s journey into tech began not with a grand plan, but with curiosity. Her early love for PowerPoint, Excel and web design in school gave her a taste for creativity and sparked an interest in computer science. But it was the doing — the work experience placements with Catalyst, PwC and a UX firm — that confirmed she was on the right path. Like so many young people, Gina needed more than just a classroom — she needed a chance to try.
Her story highlights the real power of apprenticeships. Gina joined Liberty IT, combining work with part-time study at Ulster University, gaining a full degree over four years without student debt. Through that time, she grew her skills in front-end and back-end development, data analytics and product design — but she also discovered the importance of supportive teams, mentors, and flexibility when it mattered most. When diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in her final year, it was that support that helped her keep going.
Today, Gina’s not only thriving in her role, but she’s giving back — both as a ‘Software for All’ ambassador and STEAM Studio (Liberty IT’s flagship education programme) ambassador, inspiring the next generation to see tech differently.
For employers, Gina’s story is a call to action: apprentices bring hunger, creativity and fresh thinking — not just ‘potential’ but real value.
For young people and their families, it’s proof that there are routes into meaningful, exciting careers that combine higher education and work, and avoid student debt.
And for all of us, it’s a reminder: good work isn’t just about the job. It’s about the people who back you.
