Purpose of Job

Fancy joining an award winning apprenticeship scheme?

As a building services design engineer you will work within a team of experienced engineers and assist with the design of various installations found in buildings such as the lighting, heating, ventilation and security to bring buildings to life!

Imagine yourself in an amazing building. Take away the lighting, heating, ventilation, lifts, escalators, plumbing, power supply, energy systems and the security and safety systems... All that is left is a cold, dark, empty shell! Without building services design engineers these spaces would not be brought to life!

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparation of simple calculations

  • General sizing calculations

  • Production of manual and CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings

  • Site visits

  • Site surveys

  • Contributing to providing solutions to design problems

  • Ensuring designs meet required standards following our Integrated Management System

  • Keeping you’re your training log up to date and attending training/CPDs where appropriate

  • Supporting the administration of projects

  • Commit to supporting strategic TB+A sustainability policies and our internal environmental programme objectives

Training Programme Requirements

  • Commit to goals and objectives of a career development programme including attendance of in-house and external technical and non-technical training

  • Familiarise and learn about sustainable low energy initiatives and to share this with other members of your team and wider within the Partnership

The Apprenticeship

You will attend college 1 day per week to study for a foundation degree in Mechanical Engineering at North West Regional College.  In addition, you will develop your professional knowledge and experience within the workplace, to demonstrate the achievement of the required knowledge and behaviours which will lead to End Point Assessment to become an accredited with an engineering Professional Body at the end of your apprenticeship.

This is a permanent opportunity; the apprenticeship is just the start of your journey to ultimately achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. There will be opportunities to progress onto a BEng (Hons) degree apprenticeship to continue academic progression.

Mechanical Engineering (pending validation)North West Regional College

Description

The course allows for a wide range of practical activities and opportunities for team working, data analysis and problem solving, incorporating various computer-based IT engineering applications. Students have access to industry standard design software packages including Solid Works, AutoCAD, Cosmos FEA, and are encouraged to develop their IT skills using software such as Microsoft Office. The course offers the opportunity to prepare for a range of technical and management careers in mechanical engineering and manufacture engineering. In addition, the course allows for progression onto the second year of an Honours Degree programme in a related discipline. This programme enables employees to undertake a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Mechanical Engineering validated by Ulster University. The programme is delivered part time day release one day and evening per week over three years. This programme will also develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. The final year incorporates a Work based Learning module worth 40 credits. Assessment is a combination of coursework and examinations.

56 UCAS points; Applicants must have Level 3 passes in at least one of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Engineering, Science or Technology (or equivalent), and a minimum Grade C/4 in GCSE Mathematics* and English (or University-approved equivalent**).OR Relevant Access course with an overall mark of at least 41%, including passes in Mathematics and a Science subject.

Progression Pathway

Further Study

If pathways to HLA level 6 - 7 studies exist then participants may wish to consider continuing their progression as a Higher Level Apprentice. Successful completion of the Foundation Degree with appropriate grades enables progression to Year 2 BEng (Hons) degree pathway of related degree at Ulster University or similar degrees at other universities. Your Future Career Careers in engineering are popular due to their prestige, positive job outlook and the higher than average salary.
