Job Description


The role, as an apprentice engineer, will involve a wide range of duties within the factory setting. These will include the use of basic engineering machines such as metal workers, guillotines, band saws and drills, through to CNC cutting and folding machinery. The role will include experience in the use of programming and robotic welding. Within the role, the apprentice engineer will be fabricating, building and finishing a wide range of products. Full training on all elements of manufacture will be provided. The apprentice will be expected to work within the remits of Health and Safety.

At Difco, we require an apprentice with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Full training on use of machinery will be provided, therefore, experience is not necessary. It will be important to be able to work well both individually and within a team.

The course supports the skills and knowledge development requirements for access into the engineering working environment and contains 3 components: -

  • Engineering qualifications (Combined)

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Engineering

(above cover: Welding , Fitting & Platework) Additional Units including:

  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics

  • CAD

  • PLC’s

Essential skills at an appropriate level in:

  • Numeracy

  • Literacy

  • ICT

The course supports learner skills and knowledge development for the following pathways: Maintenance Technology; Fabrication and Welding Technology; Electrical and Electronics Technology, Technical Support.

Modules

Health and Safety in Engineering

How to read and take engineering instructions in order to carryout engineering activities including the following

  • fillet lap joints

  • Tee fillet joints

  • corner joints

  • butt joints

Fitting

Produce components to specification using such things as

  • measuring and marking

  • sawing

  • filing

  • drilling

  • threading

  • power operated machines

Plate work

  • Produce plate work components and assemblies using the following processes:

  • shearing and punching

  • folding

  • oxy-acetylene and plasma cutting

Welding, mechanical fastenersHydraulics and Pneumatics

  • Understanding the use of Fluid Power within Engineering

  • Design circuits to suit the operation of engineering scenarios

Programmable and logical controllers (PLC’s)Wire and test PLCs and learn how to:

  • Use software to program Siemens PLCs

  • Control electro pneumatic circuits and motors

  • Use relay control and a range of sensors

Computer Aided Design

  • Understanding 3D design of products which apply to engineering and manufacturing sectors

  • Essential Skills and Broader transferable skills in preparation and to support working in an engineering environment.
