Engineering Apprentice
Troup Bywaters + Anders LLP
As a first-year engineering apprentice with Troup Bywaters + Anders LLP, I work in the building performance team whilst studying a degree in Building Services Engineering with Sustainable Energy.
I was always interested in green subjects at school and could see that the sustainability sector was growing rapidly. It’s what made me explore the industry further and opened my eyes to the increasing opportunities available for personal development and growth. A ‘Green Skills Career’ has enabled me to combine my love for engineering with my passion for sustainability and further develop my skillset.
My day-to-day role involves modelling and simulating engineering systems to assess the sustainable performance of a building, from energy use to carbon emissions and occupant comfort. My journey started in secondary school where I completed three Level 3 qualifications including two BTEC’s in Engineering and Construction, and one A-Level in Mathematics. From here, I gained the qualifications needed to enrol in my college course.
Through my work with TB+A, I’ve realised that many jobs involve sustainability, even when you might least expect it. Initially, I viewed a ‘Green Skills Career’ in renewable energy systems and the natural environment. Now, I’ve realised that the scope is much broader, including carbon reduction strategies, energy efficiency and embodied carbon of materials.
If anyone is thinking about a ‘Green Skills Career’, I’d advise them to join a company that actively contributes to sustainability. This allows you to gain a better understanding of the type of roles and sectors out there. I would also encourage people not to be afraid to ask questions. People are always more than happy to help and see apprentices getting involved. There are so many routes into the industry, so explore different avenues and find the route that best suits you.
